This was really interesting to me. I never really thought about social media this way, but it makes sense. I’m glad you’re back though and thank you for sharing this with us!

It’s very interesting what you said in this essay, I never really thought about social media and streaming services that way but now that I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. I actually found you on YouTube and I don’t even have tik-tok so I didn’t really know that there was so much hate for you there, it honestly sucks, but I guess it’s just how it is on social media these days with some people having to comment on everything even if they don’t have anything nice or even constructive to say. I can’t wait for more essays in the future! Good wishes to you too!🫶

This is absolutely brilliant writing. Your points and message are very well displayed, and a great response to the questions of why you “left”. I loved reading(listening to) this :)

I was also recently diagnosed with OCD and I distinctly remember listening to that last verse of Sin Eater where you're like, When your natural state is guilt you think you're living for relief, say you're sorry say you love it say you're evil underneath

It was like how dare you say my own thoughts to me like that.

Thank you for the interesting perspective on social media and its consumption it was a really good read and I'm glad I had the honor of reading (also if you don't mind my asking how do you feel about substances. For example, medication, weed , alcohol, or really any other substances people may take for health or recreation?)

this is an absolutely fascinating read!

the concept of identity in the online sphere (and being 2d text/images on a screen rather than a tangible & decidedly 3d creature) is so difficult to describe poignantly. we’re all probably guilty of saying something shitty to somebody online because our brains literally aren’t trained to recognize text or visual personifications as inherently human, yet we can comprehend a message from it anyway and get offended, and then respond in ways we wouldn’t if we were instinctually aware we were speaking to a person. and we can join mob events simply because we comprehend that x people hate y person for a perceived reasonably bad quality, even if we don’t recognize either party as people. this is only briefly touched on in this amazing read, but i found it really intriguing!

the average person truly does not understand the labor behind everything creative (content, music, art… really the only thing most people can get is writing), and the value of their attention, and how important it is to direct attention to things that, as marie kondo said, spark joy. there’s money to be made in being controversial or hateful because it catches attention — like how good ol’ elon pays the checkmarks for views. thinking about it really makes me miss the older and unincorporated internet, before everything became so corporate and dreary. then again… the internet happens to be one of the biggest global employers, so it’s tricky to also advocate for its re-disorganization. i was glad to see this mentioned in this piece — i actually found it really useful how you described the way you used social media, and what the business model of corporate-era platforms exactly is. i knew the basics but that was a great way to illuminate the deeper design!

your writing is absolutely superb and i’m so excited to read more from you!! i can see why your lyrics are so brilliant now! thanks for coming back :)

I feel the same way most days as someone who only uses socials to connect over music. On one hand It can be great for discovering and connecting with new people, but the whole 280 character content driven culture it has created is unhealthy for everyone. Combine the impermanence of here-today-gone-tomorrow but there-forever posts and this streaming service consumption thing we've got these days and I'm seeing this race to the bottom where social-media only musicians are out there practically begging for streams that pay the artists fractions of pennies (if at all) thinking to myself, "there's got to be a better model, is it direct patronage, web3, something else?" This brought me over to here to see what artists were doing here where its possible to articulate a complete thought and forge deeper connections 😁

One thing i love about online musicians is the direct connection thats possible. It wasn't really much of a thing before social media, so i guess i can be grateful for that.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, happy to explore these types of ideas.
